The Wildfire Prepared Homeâ„¢ program from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) empowers homeowners to take science-based, proven steps to meaningfully reduce wildfire risk to their home and property. IBHS also partners with leading organizations to demonstrate the life-saving benefits of home hardening and defensible space.

CAL FIRE: Ready for Wildfire

The Ready for Wildfire program from CAL FIRE helps homeowners prepare for, respond to, and recover from wildfires through practical guidance on defensible space, home hardening, evacuation planning, and emergency readiness. Through educational resources, planning tools, and statewide outreach, CAL FIRE empowers residents to take proactive steps that increase safety, reduce wildfire risk, and build more resilient communities.

The following are a selection of state-specific resources for wildfire mitigation grants. To learn more about grants available in your state, contact your local fire department or Firewise community.

Mitigation grant programs and the eligibility to receive a grant change frequently. Many programs provide funds to local governments or community partners, not directly to homeowners.

Firewise USA®

The Firewise USA® program, led by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), offers a structured approach for communities to enhance their wildfire resilience.

Department of Forestry and Fire Management

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management administers several grant programs to support various organizations at the state, regional, and local levels.

Department of Insurance & Financial Institutions

CAL FIRE

CAL FIRE provides grants to restore forest health, bolster wildfire prevention and improve firefighting capacity throughout the state.

Fire Safe Council

Grassroots, community-led organizations that mobilize residents to protect their homes, communities, and environments from catastrophic wildfire.

California Wildfire Mitigation Program

Financial assistance to support wildfire home hardening for homeowners who qualify for the program. Wildfire home hardening includes retrofitting homes with ignition-resistant materials and creation of defensible space.

Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority

Funded by a local parcel tax, Marin County residents benefit from a comprehensive program to reduce wildfire risk, including homeowner grants and chipper days.

Rebuild Paradise

Provides vouchers to residents of Paradise, CA for gravel to be used in the 0-5 foot noncombustible zone around homes.

Colorado State Forest Service

The Colorado State Forest Service helps community groups, nonprofits and others secure grants and assistance for projects that promote healthy forests and wildfire mitigation in Colorado.

Wildfire Partners

Wildfire Partners educates, motivates, and supports Boulder County residents in taking collective and personal action to build wildfire-resilient communities.
