5 Foot Home Buffer
Ensure that the ground cover within 5 feet of your home is made of noncombustible hardscape and free of fallen debris.
Remove all vegetation, including overhanding tree branches, from within 5 feet of your home.
Remove all parked boats, RVs, and other vehicles from within 5 feet of your home.
Remove all combustible items such as furniture, firewood, and trash cans from within 5 feet of your home.
Roofing & Gutters
Replace your roof with a Class A fire-rated roof cover such as asphalt shingles, concrete, brick, or masonry tiles with bird stops, or metal shingles or sheets.Remove fallen debris from your roof.
Replace plastic/vinyl gutters and downspouts with a noncombustable material such as metal.
Remove debris from your gutters and downspouts.
Exterior Vents
Install ember-resistant vents throughout your home, or cover all existing vents with 1/8-inch metal wire mesh (smaller than a golf tee).
Add louvers or flaps to your dryer vent(s).
Siding Ground Clearance
Ensure there is a minimum of 6 vertical inches (measured from the ground up and from any attached horizontal surface like a deck) of noncombustible siding material around your home.
Decks & Covered Porches
Keep the space within 5 feet of your deck/porch (including stairs) free of vegetation and other combustible materials.
Keep your deck/porch surface clear of fallen debris, trees, and shrubs, with no more than 10 small potted plants in noncombustible planters.
Ensure all the furniture on your deck/porch is made of noncombustible materials, or small enough to easily store inside.
Keep the space underneath your deck/porch free of vegetation and debris, with nothing stored there.
For any decks and porches that are 4ft or less above the ground, enclose the area underneath with noncombustible wall covering or 1/8” metal mesh.
Ensure your pergola is made of noncombustible material with no solid roof, and free from vegetation, curtains, drapes, and screens.
Fencing
All fencing, posts, and gates within 5 feet of your home should be constructed of only noncombustible materials, such as metal (aluminum, chain link, or iron) or concrete blocks. This includes where fencing attaches to your home.
Landscaping
Regularly remove fallen pine needles, leaves, and other debris from trees and bushes that may have accumulated in your yard.
Prune all trees with trunks greater than 4 inches to maintain a canopy-to-canopy distance of 10 feet or greater, with all branches removed within 6 feet of the ground.
Choose low-growing, fire-resistant plants, and keep them spaced apart or in small groupings, with no more than 3 shrubs or a maximum of 10 feet wide and 10 feet apart from other plantings.
Remove all dead vegetation from throughout your property.
